Universal serial bus

USB is de vervanger van de verouderde en langzame parallelle en seriële poorten en staat voor Universele seriële bus of Universal serial bus genoemd. USB is de huidige standaard op computers voor het aansluiten van apparaten bij computers. USB is in staat om gegevens vele malen sneller over te dragen dan parallelle en seriële poorten. De bedenker van USB is chipfabrikant Intel en heeft de protocol versie geïntroduceerd in 1996. Door de uitvinding van USB werd het voor fabrikanten van hardware mogelijk om producten te maken die zowel geschikt zijn voor PC en Macs.

USB heeft als groot voordeel dat er geen externe energiebron of batterijen aan te pas komen. De USB poort zelf zorgt voor de stroomvoorziening. Ook kunnen USB apparaten gebruikt worden zonder dat de computer opnieuw gestart hoeft te worden. Dit wordt ook wel “Hot plug & play” genoemd.
